Uses:​

Predictions with signs that something will happen in the near future:

​-Look at these black clouds. It is going to rain.

​Future plans or intentions that were planned before the time of speaking

-​I am going to travel to France next week.

Formation:

Aff: Subject+ Verb to be conjugated+​ going to+ Base form

Neg: Subject+ Verb to be conjugated+​ not+ going to+ Base form

Interr:​Verb to be conjugated+ Subject+ going to+ Base form?

Uses:​

Things we think will happen in the future (words: think, believe expect, be sure, be afraid, hope, possibly, perhaps, certainly...)

​Unplanned intentions/decisions made at the moment of speaking

​-There's someone at the door. I will open it.

​Future facts:

​-He will be 40 next month

​Threats, promises, offers, requests:

-Stop that or I'll tell your parents.

​1st conditional: I will visit you later, if I have the time.

​Temporary actions that will be in progress at a certain time in the future: --I will be having dinner at 7pm

​things that are already planned, or which are part of a regular routine

​-I will be driving into town later on.

​Polite enquiries about people's plans/ decisions

​Future perfect

​Actions that will happen/ be completed by a certain time in the future

​-I will have finished my homework by the time you get back

It is often used with a time expression using by+ a point in future time (then, the time...)
