Sir Walter Raleigh
The capital of North Carolina is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, an explorer from England. He was given permission by
Queen Elizabeth I to start a colony in the
New World. In 1585, Raleigh sent settlers to
start a colony on Roanoke Island. The
settlers soon realized food was very hard
to find. They left the area and went home
to England a year later.
