_ an unknown number will be represented by a variable (I often use x or n, but any letter works!)

_ "is" means equals (eg. two plus three is five: 2 + 3 = 5)

_ "increased" implies addition

_ "twice a number" means 2 times the number!

_ "5 less than" implies that 5 is being subtracted from something ( in this case, the something is a product.) Recall: subtraction is not commutative! So 5 - 2n would be incorrect as that would represent the difference between five and twice a number INSTEAD of the difference between twice a number and five (which is what is being asked here.)

You do not have to write the practice exercises in your notebook.

Of course, you can if you want to/ if you feel like you need more written examples.

14

Multiple Choice

fifteen more than twice a number is -23.

1

12n+15 = 23\frac{1}{2}n+15\ =\ -23

2

2n+15=232n+15=-23

3

2n+50=232n+50=-23

4

2(15+n)=232(15+n)=-23

15

Multiple Choice

eleven less than 5 times a number is 24.

1

12n+15 = 23\frac{1}{2}n+15\ =\ -23

2

11 = 5x2411\ =\ 5x-24

3

5x11=245x-11=24

4

5(x11)=245(x-11)=24

16

Multiple Choice

twice the sum of a number and 18 is 47.

1

12(x+18) = 47\frac{1}{2}\left(x+18\right)\ =\ 47

2

2(47)=x+182\left(47\right)=x+18

3

2(x+18)=472\left(x+18\right)=47

4

2x+18=472x+18=47

17

Multiple Choice

245 is 4 more than the product of 5 and a number squared

1

245 = 5x2+4245\ =\ 5x^2+4

2

245=52x+ 4245=5^2x+\ 4

3

5x11=245x-11=24

4

245+4=52x245+4=5^2x

18

Multiple Choice

19 is the same as a number reduced by 4.5

1

19 = t+4.519\ =\ t+4.5

2

19 = 4.5 t 19\ =\ 4.5\ -t\

3

19t=4.519-t=4.5

4

19=t4.519=t-4.5
