Multiple Choice

Explain how the adaptations by plants to rainforest conditions allow them to grow so well. [3 marks]

What is the most appropriate answer for this question?

1

The rainforest adapted by having buttress roots painted tip leaves and thin tree bark.

2

The leaves of rainforest trees have thick, waxy leaves with pointed tips called drip-tips and the trees have buttress roots that grow wide instead of growing deep.

3

The leaves of rainforests have drip tips that helps water to run offto the ground so that the weight of the water desnt damage the plant

Example

For a named area of tropical rainforest which you have studied, describe and explain the characteristics of its climate?

[7 Marks]

What kind of improvement can you make to gain more marks?

21

Examiner Comments

The Amazon rainforest was an appropriate choice area, however, all points made by the candidate were simple, brief, descriptive points with no attempt to explain, hence no higher mark than top Level 1 could be awarded. (3/7)

22

Multiple Select

Amazon rainforest has a tropical equatorial climate. The Amazon Rainforest is characterized by rain, heat, and more rain and heat, providing the perfect environment for plants and wildlife! The Amazon is always humid with generous amounts of rain occurring year-round.

The Amazon's climate is very warm and humid all year round with no seasons. the temperature is very warm and can get up to 40 degrees celsius. The temperature doesn't fluctuate from month to month due to its location on the equator.

The humidity is also very high due to the high temperature and the wet rainforest. there is a lot of rain and usually rains every evening due to the high humidity. Due to its location on the equator, there are no seasons.

Examiner comments

The Amazon is an appropriate choice of rainforest area. Good understanding is shown as the candidates provide both descriptive points and explanation. Full level 3 marks were awarded as the answer contained sufficient developed points and an appropriate balance of description and explanation. (7/7)

24

Level 1: ( 1 - 3 ) Marks

Statements including limited detail describing and/or explaining the main features of tropical rainforest climate.

(e.g hot, wet, cumulus cloud, sun overhead, low pressure, high rainfall, etc.)

25

Level 2: ( 4 - 6 marks )

Uses named example.

More developed statements describing and/or explaining the main features of tropical rainforest

(e.g. temperature which are no lower than 30 degrees celsius all year, small annual range of temperature, wet climate due to low pressure, high temperatures due to overhead sun)

5 marks MAX if no named example

26

Level 3: ( 7 marks )

Uses named example (e.g. Amazon)

Comprehensive and accurate statements describing the main features of tropical rainforest climates.

(e.g. annual range of temperature only 2 degrees celsius. Over 2000mm rain due to low pressure, high temperatures due to overhead sun within few degrees of equator, etc)
