What are the CONJUNCTIONS?​

• Basically they are used to ​join words and phrases.

• ​they are also used to form compound sentences.

There are 2 types of conjunctions...​

1. ​Coordinating Conjunctions

2. ​Subordinating Conjunctions

​What are COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS?

• ​They are words that are used to join words, phrases and/or sentences.

• ​We use acronyms FANBOYS to help us remember the Coordinating Conjunctions easier!

What does F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. stand for?

• ​For-because or since

• ​And-adds more information

• ​Nor-a negative option or choice

• ​But-shows contrast or opposite

• ​Or-gives an option or choice

• ​Yet-shows contrast or opposite

• ​So-shows a result

​Suzy likes cakes.

​Suzy likes ice-creams.

When you combine the sentences, remember to cross out the repeated words/phrases.​

instead of writing...

Suzy likes cakes and Suzy likes ice-creams.

You write...

​Suzy likes cakes and ice-creams.

​

Mellissa likes to wear dress.

Daniella likes to wear t-shirt and jeans.​

​combine these two sentences... Which conjunction is suitable?

​Mellissa likes to wear dress, but Daniella likes to wear t-shirt and jeans.

For example...​

​Jack and Jill went up the hill.

Another example...​

​Julia likes coffee in the morning, but Daniel likes tea.

Using coordinating conjunctions (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.) to join TWO complete sentences.​

When you join two sentences together with a comma and a coordinating conjunction, you form compound sentences!

​For instance...

​Independent Clause (IC) + comma + Coordinating Conjunction (CC) + Independent Clause (IC)

Remember...​

• Coordinating conjunctions always come between the words or clauses that they join.

• When a coordinating conjunction joins independent clauses, it is always correct to place a comma before the conjunction: ​

For example:​

​[We love going to the beach], so [we try to go every weekend!]

​

​* 1 IC + , + CC [so] + 2IC
