​Text structures refer to the way authors organize information in text. Recognizing the underlying structure of texts can help students focus attention on key concepts and relationships, anticipate what is to come, and monitor their comprehension as they read.

Cause and Effect

The text will be given an event (cause) and explain the event why it happened (effect). It answer questions "What happened? and Why did it happen?

Signal words: Because, if...then, as a result...,Therefore,Since, So that.., Due to...,

Compare and Contrast

The text will be talk about the similarities and differences of two or more. It answers the questions "What two or more things does the author talk about?" How they are similar?, and How they are different?"

Signal words: Both, like, similar to, However, on the other hand, also, compare to, although,

Descriptions

The text gives information, details and characteristics about 1 thing specifically. It answers the questions "What is the one thing the author describes? " What details do you know from this text?

Signal words: To illustrate, for instances, moreover, again, in addition

Chronological/Sequential

The text will put events in order in which they happened (time order) or procedure. (steps) It answer the question " What things or events are being put into order?"

Signal words: First, second, third, finally, next, then...

Problem and Solution

The text gives information about a problem and explains one or more solution. It answers questions "Is there a problem?" "What is the problem?" How is the problem solved?

Signal words: As a consequence, because of that, due to, as a result, therefore...
