​The Sentence

​Look at these groups of words:

​1. sweet oranges

​2. like sweet oranges

​3. like I sweet oranges

​4. I like sweet oranges.

​The first three groups of words do not make complete sense. Only the last group of words make complete sense.

The Sentence

A sentence is a group of words that make complete sense.

​Let us take some more examples:

​1. interesting stories (not a sentence)

​interesting are stories these (not a sentence)

​These are interesting stories. (a sentence)

​2. book open your (not a sentence)

​Open your book. (a sentence)

  • We should remember two things about a sentence:

  • A sentence begins with a capital letter:

  • My parents love me.

  • The train is late.

  • A sentence ends with a full stop or a question mark.

  • If a sentence says something, it ends with a full stop:

  • ​Nidhi brought a new dress.

  • Ankit forgot many words.

  • If a sentence asks a question it ends with a question mark:

  • Can you speak French?

  • ​Where do you live?
