Punctuation Rules for Direct Quotations

A directly quoted sentence begins with a capital letter.
If a quotation comes at the end of a sentence, a comma (,) or colon (:) usually precedes it.
Place a period (.) or comma (,) inside the closing quotation marks.
Place a question mark (?) or an exclamation point (!) inside the closing quotation marks if the quotation itself is a question or exclamation. Otherwise, put it outside.
If quotation marks are needed inside quotation marks, use single quotation marks on the inside. ( '..' )
