Immigration and Migration part 2

Most immigrants came from southern and Eastern Europe.

This included mainly catholic and jewish people from Italy and Russia.

In the 1890s, large numbers of African American people from the south moved to northern cities to work in factories.

This movement became known as the great migration.

The Harlem area of NYC became the largest African American community in the U.S.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door."

This poem is called "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus

The Statue represents hope for immigrants as they passed by it on their way to ellis island.

One Polish man said "The bigness of Ms. Liberty overcame us. No one spoke a word for she was like a goddess and we knew she represented the... country which was to become our home."
