Victorian Schools

In the early years of Victoria's reign almost no poor children went to school and laws such as the 1844 Factory Act were made to improve education for poor children

There were different type of schools for poor children such as :

(a)- Dame School - were set up by women who were most likely themselves poor and were more similar to babysitters than teachers.

(b)- Ragged schools- were set up to provide free basic education to orphans and very poor children.They were run by churches and often had a foundation of charity and religion

(c)-Factory school-Classes were held in factories during working hours

(d)-National school-Churches which used one teacher and lots of monitors(older students) to teach hundreds of children at a time

The Education Act of 1870 stated that all children between the ages of 5 and 13 were supposed to go to school but they'd still have to pay a small amount of money.

In 1881 it became compulsory for all children to go to school which meant that the government had to make it free.
