Math Unit 4 Review- Multi Digit Multiplication with Decimals

Multiply the non-zero digits first.

Count the zeros in the factors (numbers we multiply).

Add the zeros to the end of your product (multiplication answer).

Expand both numbers to show the value of each digit.

Multiply the numbers on the top by each number on the left.

Put it all back together and add up the products.

Multiply the digit in the ones place of the bottom number by everything above it. (Blue Highlighter)

Don't forget the place holder or "magic" zero!!!

Multiply the digit in the tens place by every digit above it, starting back in the ones place. (Green Highlighter)

Add it up.

Powers of 10 are 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, etc.

Powers of 10 can also be: 10¹, 10², 10³, etc. The "flying number shows how many zeros are in that power. 10³ = 1,000

When you multiply by powers of 10, count the zeros and shift the decimal point that many places to the right. If you have "gaps" fill them in with zeros.

Count the zeros and shift the decimal that many places to the RIGHT.

Fill in any gaps with a zero.

Count how many digits are behind the decimal and shift the decimal to the LEFT that many places.

Ignore the decimal.

Multiply like normal.

Count the digits behind the decimals in the problem.

"Scoop" the decimal that many places to the LEFT in your answer.

Underline or highlight what you know and what you want to know.

Draw a picture if it will help you solve.
