going to a place (acc. motion toward)

staying in a place (abl. place where, loc.)

leaving from a place (abl. motion away from)

generally use prepositions (ad, in, ex, etc.)

generally use the acc. and abl.

DIRTY words never use prepositions

DIRTY words have a locative form

Domus, -ūs, f. (loc = domi)

small Islands (all islands are small except Corsica, Creta, Cyprus, Sardinia, and Sicilia)

Rus, ruris, n. (loc = ruri)

the name of a Town

or a citY

if the place is 1st or 2nd declension AND singular, the locative is the same as the genitive

Roma, -ae, f. loc. = Romae

in all other circumstances, the locative is the same as the ablative

Athenae, -arum, f. loc. = Athenis

Barcino, Barcinonis, f. loc. = Barcinone

Marcus Romam it. Marcus goes to Rome.

Marcus ad urbem it. Marcus goes to the city.

Marcus Romā profectus est. Marcus set out from Rome.

Marcus ab urbe profectus est. Marcus set out from the city.

Marcus Romae mansit. Marcus stayed in Rome.

Marcus in urbe mansit. Marcus stayed in the city.
