Also referred to as the simple past tense
There are no stem changing preterite -ar verbs
The preterite is used for past actions that are seen as completed. Ejemplos:

Yo mandé un mensaje de texto a mi amigo
Yo bajé una aplicación nueva en mi teléfono anoche
