Los adverbios - Leccion

In English, adverbs modify (describe) verbs. They help us tell when, where, how, how long, or how much an action (verb) is done.

The same definition applies to adverbs in Spanish.

Some words are inherently adverbs. For example, "yesterday" tells us when an action was done. "A lot" tells us how often something was done.

Many adverbs end in -ly. This is especially true for the adverbs that tell us how something was done. For example, I happily studied my Spanish verb conjugations. "Happily" describes the action of studying.

If the adjective ends in y, the adverb is formed by changing the y to i and adding ly.

If the adjective ends in a letter other than y, simply add -ly.

Like English, some words are inherently adverbs. For example, "ayer" tells us an action was done "yesterday". "Mucho" tells us an action was done "a lot".

If an adverb ends in -ly in English, it most likely ends in -mente in Spanish. For example, I happily studied my Spanish verb conjugations. "Happily" in Spanish is "felizmente".

If the adjective ends in 'o', change the 'o' to 'a' and add -mente.

If the adjective ends in any other letter, simply add -mente.
