WALA: Making a solution
L.O: make predictions of what will happen based on scientific knowledge and understanding, and suggest and communicate how to test these.
2
Starter
Show students the apparatus you have and ask them their names.
Learners to say the function of each apparatus.
( CAUTION: DO NOT TASTE THE COPPER SULFATE BECAUSE THEY ARE POISONOUS.)
3
AIM: I am investigating how to make a solution using Copper Sulfate crystals.
Equipments
1. a glass beaker
2.a spatula
3. water
4. copper sulfate crystals
My prediction: .............................................................................................................
Reasons for my prediction: .........................................................................................
4
Method
1. Fill the glass beaker with three quatres full of water.
2. Put a teaspoon of the copper sulfate crystals into the jar and observe what happens.
5
Drawing of the investigation
Draw and label your observation.
Learners to draw in their notebooks..
( check the next slide to have an idea of how your drawing will look like.)
6
7
Results
a). Write down your observations.
b). What can you observe in the water around the copper sulfate?
c). Can you see the solid copper sulfate any more?
d). In this activity, which is the solute and which is the solvent?
8
Plenary ( Mark students work)
At first, you can see the copper sulfate, but then the crystals disappear but the blue colour remains in the water. The copper sulfate is the solute. The water is the solvent. Other common solutions are dissolving sugar in tea or coffee, dissolving instant coffee granules in hot water, and dissolving powdered cool drinks in water.
