Prewriting/Brainstorming
This is the first step of the writing process.
It is the planning phase of the writing process. This is the stage when writers brainstorm, research, gather and outline ideas.
Diagrams for mapping out their thoughts are often used. During this stage, writers should consider their audience and the purpose of their writing.
8
Writing/Drafting
This is the second step in the writing process.
During this step, writers create their initial composition (aka first draft) by writing down all their ideas in an organized way to convey a particular idea or present an argument.
The audience and purpose need to be finalized during this step.
9
Revising
This is the third step in the writing process.
In this step, writers review, modify, and reorganize their work by rearranging, adding, or deleting content, and by making the tone, style, and content appropriate for the intended audience.
The goal of this phase of the writing process is to improve the first draft.
10
Editing
This is the fourth step in the writing process.
At this point in the writing process, writers proofread and correct errors in grammar and mechanics, and edit to improve style and clarity.
Having another writer’s feedback in this stage is helpful. (This is called "peer editing.")
11
Publishing
This is the fifth and final step in the writing process.
During this part of the process, the final writing is shared.
Sharing can be accomplished in a variety of ways, and with the help of computers, writings can even be printed or published online.
