Captain Smith knows that it is an insult to ask a Chief to travel to get a gift.

The chief has several other gifts.

Samuel should only be concerned with himself.

Choosing from love means a person thinks about others, not just himself, when making a decision.

Captain Smith is popular because he likes to search for gold.

Smith is popular with the settlers because “he cares about all of [them]” based on his words and actions. The author tells us on page 170 that other leaders, such as Master Wingfield, are not respected because they only care “for their own comfort and their own gain, and for the gain of a few of their friends.”

Reverend dies from participating in a battle with the Indians.

Reverend Hunt dies from a illness caused by mosquitoes. On page 142 it states many of the settlers become sick in the summer “as soon as the mosquitoes start to buzz and bite.”

Samuel does not care what Reverend Hunt thinks of him.

Samuel knows Reverend Hunt has taught him how to get along with people, but more importantly, he has taught Samuel how to love himself.
