Sentence Structure

Cops is an acronym for sentence writing. Each letter in COPS stands for something a sentence needs.

C- Capitalization (did I capitalize names, I, months, sentence starters, and titles?)

O- overall (does my sentence have the right tense and subject verb agreement?)

P- Punctuaion- Does my sentence end with a ./!/? Does it have commas and quotation marks in the right places?

S-Spacing (do each of my words have spacesin between them to make it easy for others to read?

A subject is who or what the sentence is about

In the sentence Thiago went to the store.

Thiago is the subject.

In the sentence Ms. Lubatkin and Ms. Amato taught the class about sentences. Ms. Lubatkin and Ms. Amato is the subject.

The predicate of a sentence is what the subject does, is, or what happened to it. In the sentence Thiago went to the store. The predcicate is went to the store because it's what Thiago (the subject) did.

In the sentence The quick gray fox and the small brown dog ran. The predicate is just one word: ran.

A sentence is a complete thought. If it does not contain a subject and a predicate it is not a complete sentence. Second graders are expected to write in complete sentences to prepare them for writing essays, emails. stories, and resumes.
