Larger Numbers in Spanish

11-15 each have one form: once, doce, trece, catorce and quince.

Technically, 16-19 can be written as the three words "ten and six, ten and seven, ten and eight, etc."

This looks like diez y seis, diez y siete, diez y ocho, etc.

However, we will not use three words to write these numbers in class. It is much more common to write 16-19 as a one-word contraction using the prefix dieci. When you do this, 16 gets an accent. This is how we will write them in class.

They look like this: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho and diecinueve.

21-29 can also be written as three words (veinte y uno) or as a one-word contraction. We will be writing them as a one-word contraction in this class.

When written as a contraction, they use the prefix veinti and each number that ends in an S gets an accent.

So, they look like this: veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés, veinticuatro, veinticinco, veintiséis, veintisiete, veintiocho and veintinueve.

The 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's do NOT make contractions when they have a number in the ones column. They are written as three words.

So, 30 is treinta and 37 is treinta y siete. 80 is ochenta and 84 is ochenta y cuatro.

The number 100 in Spanish is cien.

Once you get to 101, the cien changes to ciento and you then add the next number.

So, 101 is ciento uno. 115 is ciento quince.

Do NOT put an "and" (y) between the ciento and the number that comes after it. You DO still keep the and (y) when using the numbers 31-99 that need one.

So, 108 is ciento ocho. 116 is ciento dieciséis. 140 is ciento cuarenta. 152 is ciento cincuenta y dos.

Most of the hundreds from 200-900 are simply a compund word using the correct digit plus the plural word for "hunded" which is cientos.

This is true for the following numbers: 200 (doscientos), 300 (trescientos), 400 (cuatrocientos), 600 (seiscientos), and 800 (ochocientos).

The following numbers have irregular forms: 500 (quinientos), 700 (setecientos) and 900 (novecientos).

Again, do NOT put an "and" (y) directly after these numbers. 531 is quinientos treinta y uno. 208 is doscientos ocho.

1,000 in Spanish is mil.

Do NOT put a "one" (un / uno) in front of mil. One thousand is just mil.

For more than one thousand, you just write the correct number before mil. So...

4,000 is cuatro mil.

47,000 is cuarenta y siete mil.

862, 512 is ochocientos sesenta y dos mil quinientos dos.

Again, do NOT put an "and" (y) directly after mil.

When usuing numerals in many Spanish speaking countries, the use of the point (.) and the comma (,) are revresed from their usages in English.

In these countries, five thousand dollars would be written as $5.000 and ten dollars and fifty cents would be written as $10,50.
