Run - On Sentences
Run On Sentences are a sentence running into another one without a period to seperate the sentences
Example: The dog ran, the kid biked
1st sentence: The dog ran
2nd Sentence: The kid biked
3
Multiple Choice
Which sentence is a run on sentence
While she ran, I jumped
The girl jumped as soon as I ran
The girl jumped, I ran
The girl jumped so I ran
4
Fixing Run On Sentences
1) Adding a conjunction: The dog ran, and the kid biked
2) Adding a semicolon: The dog ran; the kid biked
3) Adding a period + Capital: The dog ran. The kid biked
4) Convert to phrase or clause: As the dog ran, the kid biked
These add -ons allow the sentence to actually connect, and not just be two sentences separated by one comma
5
Open Ended
Fix this run -on sentence:
The cat ran through the room, the owner was getting annoyed
6
Using Pronouns
To stop a lot of run - on sentences, we can use pronouns
For example, in this: The dog ran. The dog jumped
We can convert the second dog to an "it" since the reader will already know it is referring to a dog
This comes out to: The dog ran. It jumped.
This can also stop redundancy as well.
