Photosynthesis and Respiration

Photosynthesis is the process plants use to make their own “food” from the sun's energy, carbon dioxide, and water.

During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water combine with solar energy to create glucose, a carbohydrate (C6H12O6), and oxygen.

in the presence of sunlight, carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen.

Through the process of cellular respiration, the energy in food is changed into energy that can be used by the body's cells.

 The sugars in the food you eat are digested into the simple sugar glucose, a monosaccharide.

During cellular respiration, glucose and oxygen are converted into carbon dioxide and water, and the energy is transferred to ATP.

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water

During cellular respiration, the energy stored in glucose is transferred to ATP

ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is chemical energy the cell can use. It is the molecule that provides energy for your cells to perform work.

Cellular Resperiation occurs in Mitochondria in both humans and plants

1. Plants use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen.

2. Plants can store glucose and use it with oxygen to perform cellular respiration to produce water, carbon dioxide, and generate ATP which is used to create energy for actual work.

3. Animals obtain glucose from plants, oxygen from the air, then perform cellular respiration to generate ATP to make energy for actual work. The by products (carbon dioxide and water) are released by the body.
