Inference: educated guess based on knowledge in the text + background knowledge you already know

Background knowledge: things you know from experience or observation (seeing, looking)

Inference equation: background knowledge + textual evidence = inference

1. Read the passage carefully.

2. As you read, gather clues.

3. Make guesses using information in the text and background information.

4. Once you've made a guess, go back in the passage to look for evidence to support your guess.
