Solving Two-Step Equations
How can you solve two-step equations?

2
To solve two-step equations you must first identify the operations in the equation.
There will be two different operations which are Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division.
3
Multiple Choice
Consider the equation -9x + 0.4 = 4. Identify the operations in this equation.

4
We are still going to use the inverse operations to isolate the variable.
The only difference is that you have two different operations, but we still do the opposite for both to isolate the variable.
5
Inverse Operations
Addition/Subtraction First, Multiplication/Division Second!
Property of equality just means that what you do to one side of the equal sign you must be equal and do it to the other side of the equal sign.
6
Remember...
You must keep your equation balanced and do the opposite operations on BOTH sides of the equal sign!
7
Let's Practice -9x + 0.4 = 4
What is the operations in the equation
What is the inverse of those operations
Do the addition/subtraction first, Then do the multiplication/division last.
What do we do to both sides of the equation to solve it?
8
Let's walk through it
Make sure you are always looking for the positive/negative signs in the equation!

To prepare for his mountain biking trip, Rhyan bought four tire patches. Rhyan paid using a gift card that had $22.20 on it. After the sale, Rhyan’s gift card had $1.90 remaining.
Write an equation to represent this word problem?
4 tire patches
$22.20 gift card
$1.90 remaining
14
Write an equation with the information from the previous slide.
4x + 1.90 = 22.20
OR
22.20 - 4x = 1.90
