As I read out the story, I want you to write down the verbs as you hear them.

How many verbs can you hear?

A root word is a basic word with no prefix or suffix.

Remember when I asked if you found the verb 'holding'? Well, the root word of holding is 'hold'. I found the root word by taking away the suffix 'ing'.

A past tense verb refers to an action or event that happened in the past.

For example:

I think Sara added too much sugar to the recipe.

Sara has already added the sugar - it happened in the past - so this is in past tense.

A progressive verb describes an action or event that is still happening (it is ongoing) at a specific time.

The verb I chose was 'holding'.

Root word - Hold

Past tense - Held

Progressive tense - Holding
