Discipline Hierarchy

Use Clear and Precise directions telling the student what to do

"Sam get out your math book."

"Cris, put your hands down."

Prompt the student to stop a problematic behavior and then start an effective/prosocial behavior

“Tomas, stop touching Ryan, and keep your hands to yourself.”

“Tia, stop running and walk to the classroom."

If a student does not follow a redirection, then provide a warning, indicating a consequences will follow if the behavior does not stop.

Hint, only warn of consequences that you can and will do

“Class, you need to stop calling out and signal to me when you need attention. If you do not use your signals, we will not have activity time today.”

If a student follows a direction at any point in the process... PRAISE the student

"Sam, good job putting your hands on your desk!"

If a student is unresponsive to a request, redirection, and warning, then follow through with the warned consequence

“Brian, because you did not stop talking to your neighbor, you are going to move to this seat
