1
Breathing/gas exchange
How do we exchange gases in the body?
2
There are many organs involved in gas exchange....
On the next slide you will be given a range of organs involved
Try and pick the correct organs from the list
3
Multiple Select
Which of the following are involved in gas exchange?
Trachea
Oesophagus
Stomach
Lungs
Ribs
4
Multiple Select
Which of the following are involved in gas exchange?
Pancreas
Intercostal muscles
Small intestine
Diaphragm
Nose
5
There are many organs involved in gas exchange, these include:
Diaphragm, mouth, larynx, lungs, trachea, rib cage and nose
On the next few slides you will need to describe what each of these does
6
Take a good look, this will be helpful for your follow up questions

Breathing
As we breathe in our diaphragm and ribs move to help us to move air in and out of our chests. Place one hand on your chest and the other on the side of your ribs, inhale and exhale slowly and deeply. What do you feel happening?
12
Open Ended
What happens as you breathe in and out? Describe what you notice/feel.

It increases
It decreases
17
Multiple Choice
When do your intercostal muscles relax?
Breathing in
Breathing out

You also need to know about the alveoli, inside your lungs. These are the tiny air sacs where gas exchange takes place. In particular, you should know what adaptations they have which enable them to do their job.
19
Multiple Select
Which of these are adaptations of alveoli?
Long, finger-like structure increases surface area
The membrane is only one cell thick which means gases have a short diffusion distance
Lots of tiny capillaries so gases can pass easily into the blood stream
Moist
Lots of enzymes so there are tiny molecules suitable for diffusion
20
Well done
From here, gases pass into the blood stream and travel around the body - see https://youtu.be/Futnu_6NmQo
Oxygen is used by the mitochondria in all our cells to produce energy from respiration. Carbon Dioxide is a waste product, which is delivered to the lungs by our bloodstream.
