Downfall of the Mughal Empire

During the greater part of the Mughal period, India has an active and considerable foreign trade with different countries of Asia and Europe. Traders from all the world over visited her shores for trade in her manufactures.

Amongst the main exports were silk. cotton, spices

Aurangzeb never fully defeated the Marathas over the course of a twenty-seven-year war.

The prolonged war emptied the treasury

The administration went out of gear because of his absence from Delhi

Aurangzeb had a succession of weak successors. 

It became increasingly difficult for the later Mughal emperors to keep a check on their powerful mansabdars. 

Mughal Empire gradually fragmented into a number of independent, regional states.

The city of Delhi was sacked - 30,000 killed

The treassury was looted

Peacock Throne was among the loot

Nadir Shah had announced a tax exemption in Persia for three years

1615, Thomas Roe, the Ambassador to James I, got an imperial farman from Jahangir to trade and establish factories all across the Mughal empire.

Slowly from a Trading Company became the Sovereign of India.
