A solar eclipse happens when the New Moon moves between Earth and the Sun

1) Total solar eclipses occur when the New Moon comes between the Sun and Earth and casts the darkest part of its shadow, the umbra, on Earth. A full solar eclipse, known as totality, is almost as dark as night.

2) Partial Solar eclipses happen when the Moon comes between the Sun and Earth, but the Moon only partially covers the Sun's disk

3)An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun's center, leaving the Sun's visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon.

4)A hybrid eclipse is a rare type of solar eclipse that changes its appearance as the Moon's shadow moves across the Earth's surface.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned with Earth between the other two, and only on the night of a full moon.

1) A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth's umbra – the central, dark part of its shadow – obscures all of the Moon's surface.

2)A partial lunar eclipse can be observed when only part of the Moon's surface is obscured by Earth’s umbra.

3)A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the Moon travels through the faint penumbral portion of Earth’s shadow.
