translating expressions

Before we begin, let's review our norms (our NORMAL standards for the way we interact with each other) for class.

This is just what it sounds like.

In a verbal expression, we use words. This is an example of a verbal expression:

The sum of three and four

To translate it, we need to look for a word that

signals us what operation to use. The numbers are rewirtten

Three minus eight r is written 3 - 8 r

Eighteen w plus 2 t minus 4 is written 18w + 2t -4

Notice that the coefficient and the variable are written next to each other with no operation sign between them. When you see this it is understood that the operation is multiplication.

Use the key words you were taught in earlier years in school to help you decide how to write the expression.

For example, if you see "the product of eight and 2" you know you are supposed to use which operation?

when you see the word than AFTER the number, you will be subtracting that number FROM the number following the word than. For example, SIX LESS THAN C means you will be subtracting 6 FROM c
