The Shang Dynasty
A family that rules a country for a long period of time is called a dynasty.
In about 1600 B.C. the powerful Shang dynasty ruled the Yellow River Valley.
The Chinese people of the Yellow River Valley built cities like the Indus River Valley people in India.
The Indus river valley poeple built brick homes, but the Yellow River Valley people built wooden ones.

What was a Shang City LIke?
Archaiologists discovered a Shang city called Anyang.
It was carved out of a forest with a palace and a temple at the center.
Like Mohenjo-Daro in the Indus River Valley, had a business area with shops, places to store food and government buildings

What did the Shang Farmers Grow?
Most common people in ancient China were farmers.
They mostly grew a crop called millet - a type of grain.
They also raised cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens.
The farmers used stone tools because plows were not invented yet.

Chinese artisans made beautiful objects for everyday use
They used ivory, marble, and jade
When people remember the Shang dynasty, they remember its bronze works most of all
