Imagine that you were someone in the previous painting. Dscribe what you are experiencing in one or two sentences.

One of the largest groups of Cherokee left Tennessee in the late fall of 1838. Accompanied by Federal troops and missionaries, the group followed the far-northern route and arrived in Indian Territory by March. This was a land route. Based on the Map evidence, list three challenges you think they faced while making a land journey on foot.

If you were part of a Cherokee group faced with the choice of the land or water route, which would you want to travel? Why? List two pieces of evidence from the Map and one piece of evidence from your own experiences to support your answer.
