5 Aspects of a Story

1. Character- the people or things the story is about

2. Setting- where the story takes place

3. Plot- how the story flows

4. Conflict- something that goes wrong

5. Theme- central idea/ belief of the story

​CHARACTER

• ​Person or thing within the story.

• There are different types of character

  • What are the names of some?

​PROTAGONIST

​The leading character or one of the main characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.

• The “good guy”

Who the entire story is mostly about

​ANTAGONIST

​Character that is actively against or opposes the protagonist

• The “bad guy”

Who the main character is battling

• ​This can also be the protagonist if they are struggling internally

​CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

​How the character changes throughout a story

• Round characters

  • Characters with personality, have depth, more complex and complicated: main characters

• Flat characters

  • Characters who are the same the whole story, no complexity, usually background characters

SETTING

• where the story takes place

• the time period the story take place in (past, present, or future)

• descriptive

• gives background information

P L O T

What happens in the story and the order it happens in: beginning, middle, end

​PLOT

• ​Exposition: beggining of the story (background information)

• Rising Action: creates suspense/ interest

• Climax: what everything has lead up to, turning point, most intense part of the story

• Falling Action: near the end, things start getting better

• Resolution: the end, when everything gets better/ fixed

CONFLICT

• the thing that goes wrong

• struggle between two people/ things

• Usually stated in the rising action, leading up to the Climax

• belief about life

• typically a universal idea

• the main idea of a piece of literature
