The 5 is in the hundreds place. It is like saying I have 5 sets of 100. So, I can count by 100 five times to figure out the value.

2. Look at the neighbor to the right; circle the digit
3. What does the circled digit tell us? "5 and above, give it a shove" "4 and below, stay low"
4. All digits left of the underlined digit stay the same. All the digits to the right of the underlined digit turn to zeros.
