What does the data show us?

  • If we calculate the slope of each line and plot the results for each force to make an acceleration-force graph we will see that acceleration and force have a linear relationship.

  • Because it is linear, we can apply the equation for a straight line:

  • y=kx + b

  • The y intercept is 0 so we can simplify the equation to y=kx

  • y is acceleration

  • x is force

  • Therefore acceleraction equals the slope of the line times the applied net force.

What is the physical meaning of the slope of the acceleration-force graph?

To see change the object. What would happen if we added a second cart on top of the first, and then a third? The spring scale would be pulling two carts and then three. Let's look at this graph.

Mass

The same force is applied in each case, with 2 carts the acceleration is 1/2 the acceleration of 1 cart. With 3 carts the acceleration is 1/3 of 1 cart. As the number of carts increases, the acceleration decreases. In other words, a greater force is needed to produce the same acceleration.

All of this leads us to a the equation a=Fnet/m

Recall that forces are measured in units called Newtons. Because Fnet=ma, a Newton has the units of mass times the units of acceleration. So one Newton is equal to on kg.m/s2.
