Observational Drawing Techniques
Angles, Upside down drawing, and Negative space
2
why should we care about Observational drawing
It makes us rely on what is actually in front of us rather then using our memory
Teaches us to see things and pay attention to details
Helps make our drawings more realistic in appearance
3
Observational Drawing Defined
Drawing what you see. Drawing what you see in front of you as realistically and as true to life as possible. Typically this involves using real objects, such as fruit in a still life, and working from life, such as real models or and outside landscape.
4
Tricks to help draw realistically
Match Angles
Draw Upside Down
Draw the Negative space
5
Matching angles
Artist use their pencils, or other straight objects, to help determine the angles within their subject (Meaning what they are trying to draw).
-Is the angle Verticle (up and down)? Horizontal (side to side)? if not it has to be somewhere inbetween.
-Decide which direction the line is tilting and at what degree
6
Draw Upside down
Helps you recognize shapes and lines
causes you to use your right side of the brian. The left side of your brain interprets visual cues as symbols. Relaying on your right side allows you to focus purely on the lines and shapes.
