Chapter 8 Lesson 1 The Age of Agustus

Emperor Octavian became known as Agustus Caesar

Rome wasn't a republic anymore, it was an empire

Augustus Caesar's 41 year reign was called the "Golden Age of Rome"

He wanted to bring back old customs of the republic

He built new temples, theaters, public buildings, an aqueduct and roads

Lands outside of Italy were called provinces

People in provinces paid taxes

Officials in provinces were not honest, didn't give the money to Rome

Caesar divided the provinces into two groups

Officials watched each other which kept them honest.

Augustus brought peace to Rome

The 200 period of peace was known as Pax Romana

Provinces were allowed to trade with each other

People had good government and the things that made life easier and more beautiful.
