How are the powers of 10 defined? What does it mean when one object is 1 x10-14 meters in size?
4
The atom is the smallest particle of matter
Atoms consist of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in orbitals around the nucleus at different energy levels which correspond to the rows on the periodic table
5
The nucleus of the atom has protons and neutrons and makes up almost all the mass of an atom. The unit is atomic mass unit or amu for short. Each proton and neutron is also composed of quarks.
A quark (/kwɔːrk, kwɑːrk/) is a type of elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons, the most stable of which are protons and neutrons, the components of atomic nuclei.
6
The particles inside an atom important facts
Atomic mass unit is the unit of measure (amu)
protons have a positive charge +p
neutrons have a neutral charge 0n
electrons have a negative charge -e
protons and neutrons each have 1 amu masselectrons have really small mass 1/1840 amu
