Halloween Vocabulary

BLUE: It's October in Ms. Torres's class.

The students are learning about Halloween.

YELLOW: Class, let's talk about Halloween.

Does anyone know when it is?

BLUE: Halloween is on October 31st.

YELLOW: That's right, Halloween is always on October 31st in the United States.

BLUE: What is Halloween about, Ms. Torres? asked a student.

YELLOW: Well, class, said Ms. Torres, Halloween is a fun holiday where people dress up in costumes.

BLUE: Oh, I love costumes! Can we be anything we want?, asked a student in ESL 3 COmmunications class.

YELLOW: Yes, students. People dress up as scary things, funny things, or their favorite characters.

BLUE: That sounds fun! What else do people do on Halloween?

YELLOW: Many children go trick-or-treating.

BLUE: What's trick-or-treating?

YELLOW: It's when kids wear costumes and go to houses in their neighborhood. They say "Trick or treat!" and people give them candy.

BLUE: Wow! Free candy? I like that!

YELLOW: Are there any special Halloween foods?

YELLOW: Many people eat candy apples and pumpkin pie.

BLUE: Pumpkins! I've seen pumpkins in stores. Why are there so many?

YELLOW:  People often carve faces into pumpkins. These are called jack-o'-lanterns.

BLUE: Jack-o'-lanterns? That's a funny name!
