The Ural Mountains are over 250 million years old and are now considered one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges. It runs for about 1,600 miles throughout the western section of Russia, starting from the coast of the Arctic Ocean and stretches to the northwestern part of Kazakhstan. The mountains serve as boundary, separating the continents of Asia and Europe, creating limited movement of people and increasing cultural differences in the customs and languages between countries. Siberia, a vast region of Russia and Northern Kazakhstan extends from the Ural Mountain in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east and southward from the Arctic Ocean. All but the extreme southwestern area of Siberia lies in Russia. Many parts of Siberia are extremely cold, making it difficult for settlement or allowing for crops to be grown.
