Carbon Monoxide (definition): a poisonous gas in tobacco smoke that’s the same as in a car’s exhaust pipes.

What does carbon monoxide do? 

1. When carbon monoxide comes into the lungs, it passes into the bloodstream. 

There, it pushes oxygen out of red blood cells. This means that the body will not get enough oxygen.

Marijuana (definition): an illegal drug made from the hemp plant and smoked for its relaxing effect. It contains a chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which changes the way people think, act, and feel.

Effects of Marijuana: makes heart beat faster, damages the brain and harms memory, can cause birth defects, brings harmful chemicals into lungs. 

NOTE: It’s more harmful than tobacco because it contains mare tar and cancer causing substances.

Inhalants (definition): substances people breathe in or sniff which affect how people feel and act

Examples of Inhalants: model airplane glue, gasoline, lighter fluid, nail polish remover, white out, spray paint

Effects of Inhalants: nosebleeds, damage to the nose, scarred lungs, vomiting, paralysis; damage to heart, bones, liver, and blood cells; death by suffocating or heart failure
