The qualities and traits of the author’s writing.

A difference between what is said and what is intended or meant. Sarcasm is a popular form of this.

The attitude with which a literary work is written; essentially the attitude of the author or persona.

A narrator that is outside of the action or characters in a literary work.

A universal message or lesson that is communicated through a literary work. Usually communicated through the use of allegory, symbolism, imagery, motif, etc. and are relevant to humanity or society.

The development, structuring, and organizing of sentences in a written work.

A brief or condensed statement that gives a broad overview of a subject.

A figurative language device where a whole is referred to by one of its parts.

Any object, person, or action that has a deeper meaning beyond the literal. Also is a concrete object that represents something more abstract.

Also known as a twist ending; the outcome or resolution of a conflict is not what is expected and takes the reader by surprise.
