It is the section where you define the broader parameters and boundaries of your research.

It is a representation of the relationship you expect to see between your variables, or the characteristics or properties that you want to study.

It is a foundational review of existing theories that serve as a roadmap for developing the arguments you will use in your own work.

It ensures that your readers will understand the components of your study in the way that you will be presenting them, because often your readers may have their own understanding of the terms, or not be familiar with them at all.
