ELA Standards 9-10 Glossary Terms Review

Sentence construction that has the same grammatical structure throughout.

Author’s way of communicating ideas -- uses diction, syntax, tone, figurative language, etc.

The study of the structure of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words; includes the study of parts of words such as stems, root words, prefixes, and suffixes

The study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history

The precise, literal meaning of a word (i.e., definition)

The feelings or ideas a word might suggest

words and phrases that are unique to a particular subject or discipline; Words or phrases that are unique to a sport, career, etc. (ex: strike out in baseball)

To examine critically the components of something to understand its meaning and/or nature as a whole

Conclusions drawn from evidence and reasoning

pieces/quotes of a text that are presented as support for the truth or validity of a conclusion or claim
