English Literary Devices Romeo and Juliet

 A joke using the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings. 

Referencing something else from outside of the story. 

When the audience understands something about a character’s actions or an event but the other characters do not. 

A solo monologue said by a character on stage alone.

A long speech said by one character. 

A comment said only to the audience; the other characters on stage do not hear the comment. 

 A character who is presented to contrast another character showing the strengths and weaknesses of the two. 

 A statement that is contradicting or opposed to common sense but could be true.

A word or phrase that has two meanings or two possible interpretations.

A line that has five metrical feet each containing stressed and unstressed syllables.
