List of good traded-honey, olives, wood, silver

Boys-home until age 6 or 7, then schooling

Girls-help around the house, no reading or writing

Girls learned to clean, spin thread, weave cloth, sing and dance. Married around age 15, some marriages arranged

Main purpose was to produce good effective citizens.

Learned reading, writing, math, literature, sports, music. Learned by memorization, books were expensive.

Military training at age 18 (earlier in some cases).

Children taught to be tough and strong.

Valued discipline and strength.

Taught to fight at age seven.

Boys lived in barracks, trained to become brave soldiers.

Fitness/military test at age 20-became citizens/soldiers if they passed.

Continued to eat, train, sleep in barracks.

Couldn’t live at home until age 30, continued to serve in military.

Relied on farming and conquering, not much trade. Took land to grow more food.
