My big sister effortlessly steers the sail in a way I can only dream of. “Figured you should learn why you shouldn’t sky surf alone until you pass the exam.”
Now that I’m 12, I’m old enough to take the exam, which takes place during the New Year festival. But that only gives me ten months to practice.
Then Yara yanks on the sail, the winds carrying us forward. This time, I don’t slip. Don’t lose control.

This quote shows that they are sisters. My big sister is annoying and a know it all. When Sammi asks why Yara didn't help it's probably because she wants to see her sister fail. This way she can stay the best. I know this because it is what my dumb, big sister would do.
In this quote it clearly states that Yara is her older sister. Her sister's response is not mean but one of a mentor. This shows not only was her sister watching and believes in her but that she wants to make sure she makes good decisions by not sky surfing alone.
