​Earth's Systems:
The four Earth spheres are distinct systems: the geosphere (land/rock), hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air/gas), and biosphere (living things).

The geosphere is Earth's solid part (rocks, soil, core), the hydrosphere includes all water (oceans, rivers, ice), the atmosphere is the layer of gases (oxygen, nitrogen), and the biosphere encompasses all life, interacting with the other three spheres for survival.

Human consumption of natural resources means using things from the Earth like water, trees, and minerals to make everything we need and want.

Consumption is another word for
using up these resources to meet our needs. We use them every day for: 

  • Survival: We drink water, breathe air, and eat plants and animals.

  • Energy: We burn fossil fuels (like coal and gas) to heat our homes, drive cars, and create electricity for our computers and toys.

  • Making things: We use wood from trees for paper and furniture, sand to make glass, and metals like aluminum for soda cans.

What happens when we use too much?

  • Running Out: If we use resources like fish faster than they can grow, we might run out.

  • Pollution: Burning fossil fuels (like oil and coal) makes smoke that pollutes the air and water.

  • Harming Homes: Cutting down too many trees destroys the homes of animals

Sustainability is using the Earth's natural resources responsibly so they remain available for future generations. It is the practice of meeting our current needs without "borrowing" from the future. 


The Core Concept

Sustainability is about balance. Imagine Earth as a giant "candy jar" of resources: 

  • Unsustainable: Taking candy out faster than it can be replaced until the jar is empty.

  • Sustainable: Taking only enough candy so that the jar can refill itself naturally or through our help (like planting new seeds).

​A resources availability depends on:
