​Honorific "お"

In Japan, it is common to add an honorific “o (お)” in front of the names of everyday traditional objects. Not all objects are given the honorific, however. You will see this language in several places and you will learn as you go along. For words introduced in this lesson, the ones that take honorific o (お) are:

• ohashi (おはし)

• ochawan (おちゃわん)

• osara (おさら)

We learned Place + de + action before. Now we see "means of," particle "de."

A noun followed by particle "de," then a verb means "do verb with that noun"

Examples:
おはしでたべてください "Please eat it with chopsticks"
えんぴつでかいてください "Please write in pencil"

Two ~te forms together

​~te form "actualizes," the verb, meaning it's being done or already complete

So if we put TWO te forms together, this becomes like "do first thing, then the next." We often see the second one as going or coming (movement verbs)

Examples:
mochimasu + ikimasu = to hold, to go "motte itte" ???
mochimasu + ikimasu = to hold, to come "motte kite" ???

• fooku o totte. (フォークをとって。) — “Take the fork.”

• naifu o oite. (ナイフをおいて。) — “Put the knife down.”

• koshou o watashite. (こしょうをわたして。) — “Pass the pepper.”

• supuun de tabete. (スプーンで食べて。) — “Eat with a spoon.”

okimasu = to place, put
watashimasu = to pass (over)
torimasu = to take

きいてください！！

​Okwari kudasai!
"Bring me seconds!"

The word "okawari," comes from the verb "kawarimasu," to replace/exchange. So this word implies exchanging food for more!
