To Build a Fire and Naturalism

American Literature is Important Because:

• It reflects our identity as a country

• It helps us understand our culture and evolution as a society

• It shows us how ideals and values have changed based on what was happening at the time

1. Naturalist writers focused on the harsh realities of life for the working class.

2. Depicted characters whose fates were determined by overwhelming environmental and economic forces.

3. Shows a shift from believing that God has 100% influence over our lives to how American's started to be motivated by free will and a desire to be successful.

A defining example of Naturalism

1. Harsh Reality - Man is nothing against the forces of nature.

2. Fate - Man CAN control his fate if he makes the right decisions for himself.

3. Motivation -A desire for a better life can contribute to one's fate.
