Introduction to Conjunctions

Have you ever wanted to connect two great ideas in a sentence but weren't sure how? Or maybe you've written a sentence like, "I like pizza. I like ice cream." and wished you could join them together smoothly? That's where conjunctions come in! Conjunctions are powerful connecting words that act like bridges in our sentences. They link words, phrases, and even whole ideas together. Without them, our writing would sound choppy and disconnected. Learning to use conjunctions like and, but, or, so, and because helps us express more complex thoughts, show relationships between ideas, and make our writing flow beautifully. They are the tools we use to build better, stronger, and more interesting sentences!

Let's Learn with an Example

Let's look at two simple sentences: "Maria loves to read. Maria does not like to do math homework."

First, I notice that repeating the name "Maria" sounds a bit clunky and repetitive. My goal is to combine these two sentences into one to make it sound more natural and to show the relationship between the two ideas.

Next, I think about what that relationship is. The first sentence is positive (she loves to read), and the second is negative (she does not like homework). This is a clear contrast. The best conjunction for showing a contrast is but.

Now, I will rewrite the sentences as one, using but to join them. I also need to put a comma before but because I am connecting two complete sentences. I can also replace the second "Maria" with "she" to avoid repetition. The new sentence is: "Maria loves to read, but she does not like to do math homework."

Finally, I'll read my new sentence aloud to check it. It flows smoothly and clearly communicates the contrasting ideas in a single, more sophisticated sentence. By using the conjunction but, I’ve made the meaning much clearer for the reader!
